As long predicted by the likes of Tipsy and Jesus, Celina OL/DE Jake Raulerson is Texas’ first commitment of the Class of 2013.
This is a big one. Raulerson is ranked #23 overall in the Class of 2013 by 24/7. His offer list is a sight to behold: Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Notre Dame, Miami, tOSU, Oklahoma, Stanford, and about twenty more schools had already offered. You won’t find many more impressive collections of offers than that, especially a full year from NSD.
Now let the offense versus defense debate begin!
UPDATE: Video of Raulerson committing to Texas. Pretty cool. He speaks over the phone with Mack, Searels, and Giles.
Bad Behavior has blocked 2080 access attempts in the last 7 days.

Reminds me of a guy I absolutely hate as a person but love as a player, Jared Allen, Vikings DE. High motor, never gives up on a play and pursues plays 30 yards downfield. When he arrives at the ball-carrier he delivers a tackle with ill-intentions.

The question of what his highest and best use on the field is is an interesting one that we will be discussing for the next 18 months, at a minimum.
His technique and aggression at OT are awesome. Can he gain 40+ pounds of good weight?
He also looks great as a SDE.
And here is a wacky idea: can he catch? He would be an absolute road-grading TE, which is an intriguing thought if he can run and catch the ball at all well. Consider him next to a competent RT…what would the Power play look like?

So we have eight million bucks worth of coaches, who will get to watch Jake in person every day in practice to decide where he fits in best, and you are asking a bunch of internet junkies who probably never saw him play in person which side of the ball he should line up on?
Makes perfect sense to me.
(Defensive end, for sure, or the coaches are morons … and I like the Randy White comparison above … unless of course he bulks up and can play center or guard.)

And concerning where Maulerson will end up, if we presume he can mash on both sides of the line at an elite level then here’s hoping depth chart should decide it. If both Estelle and Hughes pan out but Ridgeway and Cottrell don’t, then play him at defensive end. If the reverse is true, make him an OT.
But I have a hunch that they’ll get him on both sides of the ball in practice and he’ll demonstrate either better aptitude or a higher ceiling at one position or the other. If that’s the case, play him where he makes the biggest impact. But based on the film I couldn’t tell you which side that would be.

Playing OT in highschool at 250lbs and in college/NFL @ 250lbs are two different things. Find me another 2013 nationally recruited OL who’s 250 lbs and we’ll talk.
His ceiling at OL would be OG. You’d have to really be hurting for an OG or he’d have to be dissappointing at DE to make that trade.

I would love to see him tried at TE early on while he fills out (or perhaps, does not) and then figure out the long term plan. Our TE situation requires some outside the box thinking at this point. I really liked what Poehlmann did in a blocking role late in the season. Kid reminds me a bit of Chad Lucas or maybe Aaron Humphrey, but more like a Gattaca version of those dudes. As far as nicknames, you just can’t beat Maulerson IMO.

Mack and Jay spell it out in a very plain way.
Difference maker on both sides of the ball and with the high level of talent around him it will be ill advised to double team him. Can you imagine on D what Malcom Brown, Dez Jackson, or Torshiro San will do if Jake is doubled.

I am truly impressed with Jake and his parents. They should be very proud of him. I feel that we are lucky to have him, and I’m glad that he chose Texas. It is really that simple.
When it was time for my daughter to choose a University, I wanted nothing but the best for her, as well. I considered Texas the best, and still do. She has never regretted her decision, and cannot wait to complete residency so that she can make all of the Longhorn games. Right now, with a 6 day work week, and an 80 hour per week maximum, that would be a little difficult, but in another year things will be quite different.
