It’s time we started taking a good look at the cream of the crop for next years recruiting cycle. I know your heart is broken that it’s only 25 players. Why, you ask? It’s because we’re Texas. Let the rest worry about 26-100. Hell, Billy Liucci hilariously does a Fab 55. Talk about ignoring your readership. He should go from 75-130 and rename it Aggie Wheelhouse.
Let’s take a look at where we stand. Remember these lists change frequently as these guys are just beginning their Junior years.
1. Johnathan Gray/RB/Aledo
SHOCKING, RIGHT?!?! Everyone’s familiar with this kid by now. Perhaps our top target next year, although with the Malcolm Brown verbal and the potential commitment of Aaron Green, he won’t be our biggest need (at least from the in state collection). That distinction goes to…
2. Malcolm Brown/DT/Brenham
If coupled with this year’s Malcolm Brown, they would become the best same named duo since Simon & Simon. He’s that good. In our never ending struggle to go into a season with no questions at the DT spot we’re going to have to keep landing the can’t misses. MB is 2012′s version of that. You have to like our chances with any Brenham kid we truly covet, despite Aggie’s lustful leer towards Bluebonnet country.
3. Cayleb Jones/WR/Austin High
Land this kid and the tears flowing from recruitniks over not pursuing Trey Metoyer should subside. Was the staff planning this all along? Probably not, but if we keep Jones home, we’ll have a similar skill set to Metoyer’s on campus. Yes, the Austin Maroons have the potential top WR in the country for 2012 on their roster. Meanwhile, Anderson High has a few dudes that Texas State is taking a hard look at. Just sayin’.
4. Curtis Riser/OL/DeSoto
The clear number one offensive lineman in state. The chatter about his devout love for LSU has died out and things are looking as good as can be expected on this front at this stage in the game.
5. Trey Williams/RB/Dekaney
This stud does dirty work piling up yards in one of the best districts in state and is absolutely unstoppable. Similar measurables to Aaron Green, but this kid is an every down back in high school. Along with Quandre Diggs, he’ll be the most exciting player in the Houston area.
6. Matt Davis/QB/Klein Forest
I’m not going to drop a kid too far because of his injury. If he was healthy, I’d have him right behind Gray. Hopefully he uses this year to read defenses and develop the mental side of the game. And scope chicks in the crowd while wearing his letter jacket emblazoned with “I don’t know if you’ve heard, but I’m kind of a big deal.”
7. Derek David/LB/Rockdale
The confounding super blue chip committed to Tech earlier than most expected after getting hypnotized by Tuberbille’s southern drawl of empty promises about bringing an SEC defense to the western slope. David admits to some flirtation with Herr Muschamp, who pronounced the Rockdale Kid one of the best young LBs he’s ever seen. If I’m Tuberville, I set David up to impregnate a coed next time David heads to Lubbock, not that those things need to be pre-arranged. It’s like manifest destiny in a dry county. I don’t know when David switches, my guess is next March or April, but he will.
8. LaDarrell McNeil/S/A. Maceo Smith
Consensus is nearly split on who the best safety is from the people I’ve talked to. The ‘La’ preceding ‘Darrell’ might be cause for concern as Dallas kids with creative parents generally end up at OU, but who knows. This is a new era. Similar to Ahmad Dixon, but no word on if he’s as Baptisty. If Maceo Parker’s band plays this kid’s prom, we’ll be there. Pass the Peas, ftw.
9. Mario Edwards/DE/Denton Ryan
This is where Shuttlesworth tells you that Ryan HS puts out more quality talent than the Mickey Mouse Club. To defend his point, he’ll run off a litany of names like Timberlake, Spears, and Aguilera. I prefer to stick to the subject and talk football. Edwards = power end with the inevitable “spin down to DT” possibility. Bad dude wherever he lines up.
10. Edward Pope/S/Carthage
Imagine being a running back and getting past the second level of the Carthage defense (Kendall Thompson included) with your mental faculties in tact when all of a sudden…BOOM MF’ER!! Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Edward Pope. I’ve seen his height at a consistent 6’3″ and his weight at an inconsistent 175-195 lbs. I don’t think Pope will be the hard gainer that Bryant Jackson could prove to be. What’s not in dispute is that Pope is just “meeeaaan, maaan, meeeeaaaan.” (Free 6 month Recruitocosm subscription to the cosmonaut that can identify the quote).
11. Thomas Johnson/ATH/ Dallas Skyline
The staff has some familiarity with Johnson from when he played with Ross Apo at the Dallas School for the Children Whose Parents Love Them More Than Yours Love You. Now he’s at DISD powerhouse Skyline. Smart career move. It should take him about 1 snap of the ball to get up to speed with the level of competition. This is where I use buzz terms like: sudden, good hips, change of direction, witchy hands, and the like. I think he’s a corner, though some see WR.
12. Jordan Richmond/LB/Denton Ryan
“See, see, I told you Ryan is stacked!” sayeth Jesus. That’s obviously not in dispute. Some say Richmond is an OLB, I disagree. I see an ILB all the way. But in Muschamp’s defense, these acronyms don’t matter. See Acho, E. and Johnson, Drav. He’s already 220 lbs. with a 4.7 forty. Do the math.
13. Peter Jinkens/OLB/Dallas Skyline
Here’s your prototypical OLB who flies to the ball. After taking some bigger backers in 2011, look for UT to look for some coverage type OLB’s. Keep in mind we’re almost sure to offer outside linebacking samurai Kwon Alexander.
14. Ladarius Anthony/RB/Kilgore
Anthony may be slipping a bit, similar to what happened with The Woodland’s Daniel Lasco, who is Berkeley bound. We’re not yet sure if his tallish and slender frame will allow him to run between the tackles at the next level.
15. Javonte Magee/DE/SA Sam Houston
This is a big guy who right now is listed as a DE. Chances of him staying at DE are about as good as you making it through a Jesus Shuttlesworth recruiting luncheon without him passing “the offering plate” around. From what I’m hearing from a friend in SA, Magee is likely to earn his scholarship at LT.
16. Timothy Cole/OLB/Brenham
Once known for Blinn girls that put out before they went to A&M and became marriage material, Brenham is now better known for rolling D1 afoletes off the assembly line. Every year they produce one of the top crops within the state. Here’s yet another true OLB for the staff to evaluate closely. I’ll have a better opinion of the Brenham players after I see them in a couple weeks. They’ve also got RB Troy Green who barely missed my top 25. He’s listed as a RB, but could play a number of positions.
17. Halapoulivaati “The Curriculum” Vaitai/OL/Haltom City
Thankfully there aren’t many mormons in Haltom City or The Curriculum would be a BYU lock by heritage alone. Vaitai has a good disposition and a long lean frame that should easily add weight. He seems dead set on playing college football with his brothers, who aren’t nearly the prospects. Aggie has no problem with shit like that. See: Bennetts, Martellus and Michael.
18. Kiante Griffin/WR/Hebron
If I was named after the innebriant that led to my conception I’d sound like a bass player–Moonshine, ftw! Luckily, my parents kept it conventional, and named me after the car they were in. Yes, my real first name is Peugot. Griffin is intriguing to me. I see a safety sometimes, other times I see Sloan Thomas. Like Mike Crabtree, Griffin just sees foo’balls, man. Either way, he’s a talented guy that probably moves up this list sooner rather than later.
19. John Michael McGee/OL/Texarkana
He’s currently listed at OT, but he’ll be a guard on the next level. McGee could possibly garner interest from the staff if we’re still struggling to run the ball this year. Like that ever happens … Aggies will offer early by virtue of his name alone. And that might be the best OL evaluation they’ve made in years.
20. Victor Irokansi/DE/Pflugerville Hendrickson
A DE of African decent? Take. His athletic measurables are improving by the day. He already has a good motor. If he refines his game a little, I can see him shooting up the boards. He reminds me of FSU’s Holmes Onwukaife, who the staff heavily considered offering.
21. Bralon Addison/ATH/MoCity Hightower
I don’t know exactly why it is, but speed, speed, and more speed reign supreme in Fort Bend County. Trained to run from the law? Who knows. Every year they put burners out. Here’s another. Nevermind the ATH tag, he’s a DB in the Dakarai Pearson mold.
22. Trevor Knight/QB/SA Ronald Reagan
While he’s not exactly Mondale to Davis’ Reagan, he’s not on Davis’ level, but he’s a more accurate passer. I like what I’ve seen so far and I think he has a chance to be a good QB. I just don’t think he’s the answer for Texas in this all important cycle. Who knows, the kid could blow up and I’m changing my tune in a couple months. You have to remember these kids are just starting their junior year of high school, when most of you were just trolling for ass and trying to pass calculus. Knight is a big Texas fan and if we do offer he’s all orange. But the staff needs to exhaust all options at the position.
23. Shakiel Randolph/S/Waco Midway
Here we go again with the Lee Jackson experiment. An extremely tall (6’4″) yet rangy DB. Randolph is surprisingly strong for his lankiness.
24. Joey Hunt/DT/El Campo
This guy is gaining some traction in recruiting circles. I’ll have a better eval shortly as I have a good friend that’s going to be coaching against them. I’ll call my shot now. Kid is going to OU.
25. Jeremiah Tshimanga/LB/North Richland Hills, Richland
Good measurables with an absolutely non stop motor. Tireless worker. That alone typically earns you a spot on Tipsy’s Top 25. Think Nkwopara but 17 inches taller.
—-
On Tipsy’s 2013 Radar:
Vincent Taylor/DT/SA Madison – Quick NT gave Cibolo fits all night. Plays with great leverage.
LaQuintas Wallace/RB/Tyler Lee – Speedy stud soph that they’re still figuring out how to use. Just add touches. He’s a take by name alone. Yes, sometimes you have to do that.
We’ll be revisiting this list as the season progresses.
Who else should make the cut, Cosmonauts?

Tipsy, spectacular burn on Blinn girls. Could not be more accurate.
Yep Anderson does suck at football. When Ryan Baily is your top collegiate player in recent memory, you have problems.
The Fort Bend crack will piss off a couple people, but I laughed out loud.
Some brief but numerous observations:
^Jonathan Gray, possibly a better back than Malcolm Brown. Will be the top prospect in the state, quite possibly the country if he transfers to Miami Northwestern High.
^ TexAgs need to shut up about DT Malcolm Brown. The guy is not an Aggie lock. You’re not a top 2 recruit in Texas and an Aggie lock. Hell Aggie couldn’t even claim that during the Wrecking Crew glory months. Scoreboard Aggie, Brenham is a Texas pipeline school. Shermwasnapping will sell depth chart, I hope DT Brown buys winning national championships at Texas.
^ Miami has a lot of problems right now, Shannon despite the best PR efforts does not run a clean ship. The Jones family would be out of their minds to thrust their son into the Miami environment. I think Jones makes the short drive from Tarrytown to Jester in 2012.
^ Curtis Riser is a stud and probably the lone “impact” offensive lineman in 2012. A must get. LSU sounds like a school boy crush move in Texas.
^ You are higher on Trey Williams than I am , the GOBR Trey Williams -Fozzy comparison makes my blood run cold. I think Williams is too small to be a complete back while at University.
^ I commend you on Matt Davis at # 6. A special player at a need position in 2012.
^ David is going to be tough to pry away from Tech. I don’t see how he decommits from Tech with his brother enrolled there and switches to Texas. Awkward conversation at Thanksgiving.
^ Love the jumbo prospects that aren’t running backs. Come on down Mario Edwards. I think the Acho81 Hybrid End/Tackle is Coach Boom’s new Buck position. The Buck position is so 2008.
^ Pope is a definite take.
^ Thomas Johnson sounds dynamic and plays at Skyline, take.
^ I thought Boom was moving away from the “spread linebackers,” but if Jinkens has enough size, take.
^ I think Ladarius Anthony is the second running back in 2012 if Texas gets Gray. Kilgore kids do not say no to Texas. Body seems like a project, but with Malcolm Brown, and possibly Aaron Green and Jonathan Gray playing in front of Anthony, time is on our side. Could be a contributor after 3 years on campus.
^ Get Magee on campus and figure a position out for him. LT, DT doesn’t really matter.
^ Vaitai. Honestly don’t know much about him, but he’s from Reggie Wilson’s alma mater and is Samoan. I have screaming for years that Texas needs to become a Samoan pipeline much like they are a West African destination. Vaitai could be our first Samoan ambassador. Look at what USC has done with Samoans. All Samoans do is play in the NFL. Enough said, take.
^ Victor Irokansi. African? Check. From the Austin area? Check. Well, he’s a take Bruce and Bobby.
^ I have no idea where Addison plays in college, but he’s a speed guy. Seems to work for Urban Meyer, take.
^ I think Knight lucks his way into a Texas ship. In 2012, Vince Young picks up the Texas program from the side of the road, and sheds a single tear. I am pulling for Matt Davis, but Texas seems to be moving away from true dual threat quarterbacks.
^ Get Randolph on campus and figure out a position. Does he have the frame to move down to OLB? Who cares he’s 6’4” and fast, take.
^ Jeremiah Tshimanga. Reggie Wilson’s cousin, West African. No need to explain further, take.
Vincent Jackson showed up Green and Brown at times, put Jackson on speed dial Akina and Boom.
LaQuintas Wallace. I have heard nothing but glowing reports on the kid. I hope Major is stalking him at his high school.

Sweet to see the Ryan HS shout out. I didn’t realize they had two “Texas good” talents.
How does Mario Edwards compare to Derek Lokey?
Also, any chance the staff looks out of state for the 2012 QB?

Jesus,
Good article. The 2012 class will be an interesting one with so many story lines already developing. A list of questions:
1.) Can you give us an educated guess of how this class will turn out if you were given 18-20 scholarships? Or some kind of recruiting board that list priorites (including OOS guys)?
2.) Will you touch on any of the OOS prospects? Names like Kwon Alexander, Trae Elston, Dorial Green and Zach Banner get me pumped. The reason I ask is because you’ve already covered Barry Sanders, Jr.
3.) Halapoulivaati Vaitai…does Texas have even a slim chance with this kid? Geez, I love my siblings, just not enough to forgo a Texas offer to play at UTEP or SMU. Edward Pope…I hear he likes TCU a lot. Tough get?
4.) Would Texas take a chance and recruit Javonte Magee as an LT and Thomas Johnson as a CB?
5.) I also don’t see Derek David sticking with Texas Tech. I’ve heard that he showed his ass a bit while at the Texas camp this summer. Any word on that? He’s undoubtedly a ridiculous talent, but maybe on the cocky/stupid side? He looks like a simple ol’ country boy in his Rivals profile photo. Some say he wouldn’t even qualify to play Division I.

Lark–Two different players. Lokey was squatty and cock strong and primarily a run stuffer, whereas I think Edwards will have the ability to slide up and down the LOS and get after the run and pass alike.
jtt–No problem my friend. Good questions.
1. 1-QB, 1-2 RB’s, 3 WR’s, 1-TE, 3-4 OL, 3 DL, 3 LB’s, 4 DB’s and maybe a kicker. I’ll have to do an entire post on this to explain further.
2. We look good with the Oxford Alabama kids. Both Alexander and Elston really talk UT up….so did ASJ. If they make it to the first Jr. day that will be quite telling. I like our chances, but it’s still hard to rip kids from that neck of the woods. Dorial Green can pretty much punch his card to anywhere he wants to go. I wouldn’t get too excited about him though, usually the staff locks into a skill guy and puts all their eggs into one basket. Next year it will be Jones at WR. The OL situation next year will be one to watch. The in state talent isn’t nearly as strong as it was this year…All bets are off. I could see us looking OOS for sure.
3. Kid just doesn’t seem that interested. As hard as it is to believe, not all kids like UT or Austin. I don’t get it either. However, if the staff targeted him hard, we might have a small chance.
4. I don’t think offering Johnson at CB would be taking a chance, but the staff is favoring bigger corners these days. Gone are the Palmers, Beasleys and Fosters. If the staff likes Magee, they’ll pull him and play where he fits. No more square pegs in round holes.
5. I plead the 5th.
On the whole, the talent is down across the state. If we finish in the top 5 next year in recruiting, go ahead and assume we went OOS a lot more than usual. The staff will have to get creative and adapt.

And if we pull a jordan hicks or Christian Westerman so be it.

Can Matt Davis run the offense that Greg wants?
Derek David will be one of the top 3 players in the state next year. We should ignore his Tech verbal and recruit aggressively. The stuff with the brother is a complication.
The beauty of these early lists is how many of these guys will drop out entirely or make a move up to the top. At this time last year, people were calling Chris Barnett a Top 20 in-state recruit etc.

A 2013 guy you should keep an eye on is DB Will Barrows from Dallas Skyline. 5’10, 170

Tipsy,
Thanks for the detailed response. I’d love to see y’all take this even further and do some kind of 2012 recruiting board with the priorities at each position (including OOS prospects). I agree that the overall talent level in Texas seems to be down for the upcoming class, and I’ve heard the staff could offer an abnormal amount of OOS prospects. Y’all are always ahead of the game and are more connected than other sites, so I’d love to see what you can come up with (feed the recruiting junkies!). Maybe closer to Junior Days?

Good list Tipsy. Some thoughts:
- You have Gray #1. Very astute. Those who don’t need to see him.
- I love Trey Williams but I’m not as bullish on him as you. Top 15 guy for me but not top 5.
- I’m higher on Derek David and while the Tech commit is a roadblock we’re going to make hard to say no.
- Edward Pope is going to have to prove it to me after the knee surgery. Not top 10 right now.
- I’m watching Richmond, Edwards and De La Torre tomorrow night. I’ll let you know what I think.
- I’m really high on Jinkens. Linebacker size and sprinter speed (runs 100 and 200 for Skyline).
- I’m not sure about Anthony. Talent yes. Head meh not sure.
- Magee to OT is a possibility, I like his athelticism, but I think he’ll be recruited as a DT.
- I like Trent Jackson in the top 25.
- Keep an eye on Terrance Taylor.

I like Trey a great deal, seen him 3 times and the kids is tough, very quick, and great vision. Maybe I am biased, but I have a better frame of reference in regards to Trey’s competition than what I saw from the Steele defense last week and if Texas didn’t get Green this year and got Gray and Williams next year I am not so sure they don’t come out better in the long run. Williams is not taking the pounding that Foz took in high school.
Ashame Matt is missing the season, but as good as he is going to be he isn’t VY and short of a second coming I don’t see Texas changing the offense the way they did for VY. Don’t have a problem with that if Texas is truly committed to select kids that fit into a system and not this hodge-podge crap they have done in the past.

As for the SL dig, ha ha ha ha! (I went to Dulles.) I’m actually not sure why we’re churning out so many fast guys right now. I know you’ve got a lot of upper middle-class families hanging out in the region. We’ve also got a lot of athletes moving to the area, particularly Sienna Plantation (Mo City area). So maybe they just have money to burn on the track. Plus, if you’re a high school athlete and you can’t outrun Sugar Land cops, there’s an inherent problem there.

QB: Matt Davis–Supposedly worth the risk
RB: Jonathan Gray, Barry Sanders, Jr.–I don’t give a shit about competition, recruit the best players
WR: Dorial Green-Beckham, Cayleb Jones, Thomas Johnson–Green and Jones could be top two receivers in the country next year
TE: IDK
O-Line: Curtis Riser, Halapoulivaati Vaitai–One can’t-miss prospect and one Samoan. A SAMOAN!
DE: Mario Edwards, Victor Irokansi–An African on defense: thank you sir, my I have another?
DT: Malcolm Brown, Javonte Magee–Brown is probably the most important recruit for Texas next year
LB: Derek David, Kwon Alexander, one of Peter Jinkens/Jordan Richmond–David’s obviously the big fish and Kwon Alexander looks like he could be a really interesting safety/LB hybrid. Richmond looked alright, but nothing special. Couldn’t find Jinkens tape. If we continue to take our usual allotment of 3 per class, looks like those two will be battling for the last spot
CB: Bralon Addison–Looks like an extremely weak year for CBs. Do we go OOS here along with QB and (gulp) TE?
S: LaDarrell McNei, Edward Pope–Texas doesn’t lose recruiting battles to TCU for guys they want. Safety looks a lot stronger than cornerback from a secondary standpoint.
Who am I missing?

Thoughts on Kiante Griffin (and David Jenkins) from the Hebron-Colleyville Heritage game:
Hebron – 60
Colleyview Heritage – 27 (21 pts in garbage time)
Kiante Griffin
– Big, physical kid (looked all of his listed 6′, 200 lbs).
– Played exclusively as WR/return specialist until midway through the 3rd w/Hebron up by 40 pts. Then played some corner.
– Avg’d roughly 20-25 yards per punt return. Took one 70 yards to the house, but called back on penalty).
David Jenkins
– Tall rangy kid, but very skinny.
– Played primarily zone defense. No highlights in terms of pass break-ups or pick opportunities. Gave up 2 deep passes where receiver split him and the safety. One looked to be more the safety’s fault, on the other, he was on the receiver’s hip but the WR made a better play on the ball.
– Very quick, agile, terrific closing speed, but not very physical at this stage, got man-handled by whoever put a block on him and was a liability in the running game.
– Missed some tackle opportunities in front of him where he tried to close too fast and overran the receiver. Put one big hit on a WR after catching an 8-yard out, then tweaked his ankle celebrating, Martin Gramatica-style. Hobbled off the field but was back later in the game.
– Overall, has all the tools but needs to get bigger and is a work in progress at this point. Thought I’d see him make more plays, honestly.
– Saw 3 catches (1 sideline pass taken back 40 yards for TD, 1 30-yard deep pass, 1 12-yard out)
– INT for TD (Pick-six on the first play I saw him line up at corner in the 3rd).
– Overall, blue-chip athlete and natural playmaker. Could play offense, defense or special teams. Offer him as an athlete on Junior Day and figure it out late, IMO.

Do you research and quit baggin’ on the Ags to get more burnt orange sympathy.
