Somewhere in infomercial hell, Jenny Craig and Richard Simmons are weeping. And somewhere in actual hell, Scipio Tex is maniacally laughing. Keep in mind it was our resident Joe Weider that posited the following theory on this very subject as it pertains to the sasquatch TE OL from the North Country, Austin Seferian-Jenkins:
When you give an ectomorphic 16 year-old three squares a day, some metabolic maturity, and a college weight lifting program, significant pounds are going to be added.
In big time Division 1 football (that Dan Hawkins still dreams of participating someday), why wouldn’t you want a kid to get bigger and stronger? If said 16 year-old man cub is starting out at over 260 he’s more likely to end up as the 315 pound gorilla in the room than the 255 tight end version of Kate Moss. Unless GNC starts selling Brian Cushing’s Magical Man Boob Sculpting Estrogen Weight Loss Workout Warrior formula.
Enter Mack Brown and his Jimmy Stewart-like conscience when it comes to telling athletes not what they want to hear, but what they need to hear. Recruiting facepalm or good karma? The ultimate Mack Brown truth-or-dare cautionary tale occurred in the recruitment of current LSU wide receiver Russell Shepard. Had Brown not had the audacity of veracity, to quote Don King, and told Shepard he could compete for the quarterback shot, he’d be catching passes from Garrett Gilbert as we speak. But no one died when Les Miles lied, so to the prevaricator goes the spoils. (Or at least until Miles is fired because he’s a raving lunatic with the diplomatic sense of a Mujahideen and the clock management skills of a Tibetan monk.)
So to rip off the band aid, here’s what went down this past weekend with respect to Austin Seferian-Jenkins. We wanted him as a 260 pound tight end of the future. And he wanted to be our 260 pound tight end of the future. But he stepped on the scales and it read 276 –read: 310 Lb future anchor tackle of the Washington Huskies.
Notice how Austin praises our staff’s honesty in all the subsequent updates? That’s what he’s referring to.
At this point, the travel expense issue is just a rationalization to help him choose Washington. At this point it looks like it’s U Dub all the way. Sarkisian has done a good job closing the gap on the in-state stud and AS-J’s presence at a Huskies practice this week comes as no surprise.
And if you’re keeping tabs on your Jesus RecruitPrediktor Scorecard at home, we’re not counting this as a miss. We’ve said all along that if Texas tells Austin Seferian-Jenkins he’s a tight end, he’d be a Horn. And while he technically may have been offered as one, at some point there was a candid conversation about his future role in the program and you can bet the words “hand on the ground” were mentioned. If his financial advisor had been in the room, he would have be grinning and nodding vigorously. But recruiting decisions are often based on the whims of a 17 yr old kid. And Texas is a long way from Washington…
Malcolm Brown
Odds of Committing: 105% — extra 5% boost to sway the doubters.
This one’s locked and loaded and don’t let anyone tell you differently. Brown notified the staff weeks ago that he’s Austin bound. We’ve had two different sources close the program confirm as such, including the one that gave us the ASJ prediction and the news of Rasco visiting this past weekend, which scooped all other media outlets foreign and domestic. Time to ask for a $10 refund for the month of August from your preferred pay wall site. Seriously, ask them!
We anticipate Brown to commit before school starts and our five years of wandering the desert giving offers to RB mirages hoping they’d bear 6’1 / 210 / 4.4 fruit will finally be over soon.
Jermauria Rasco
Odds of committing: 70% — holding steady
We told you Jermauria was still being heavily recruited by Texas months ago when other services had the talented defensive end pegged as an afterthought as far as the Horns were concerned. We also reported he was visiting Austin this weekend. Not a peep from anyone else. Learn to trust Jesus and we’ll forgive the rest for their lazy transgressions.
This week, there’s not much to report other than Jermauria still has the Longhorns at the top of his list. Additionally, Rasco has ties to the Houston area with multiple friends and family current residing in the Bayou City. We’ve also learned that Rasco’s mother will be moving to Houston in the near future and that has to solidify the Horns position over LSU and FSU. Again, the kid loves Muschamp and he’s coming from the one area of Louisiana that doesn’t fall into the death grip of the Bayou Bengals.
Aaron Green
Odds of Committing: 5% — still a long shot.
If Brown chooses the Horns, the percentages are virtually nil for a Green commitment. The Horns have needs at other positions even if ASJ opens up another ship. We’re guessing Green’s spot goes to a corner like Charles Jackson, a player that emerges late in the process with a huge senior year, or an OOS five star caliber player that has contacted the staff to get an indication of interest. Yes, that’s happened. Do they end up in Austin? No. But we’ll generally flirt back.
Another thing the staff is cognizant of is depth chart concerns for the super blue running back prospects in the 2012 class. Jonathan Gray and Barry Sanders, Jr. are high on the staff’s priority lists for next season and they feel that both of these players are better all around backs than Green.
So let’s recap where things stand.
We’re sitting at 22 commitments with Malcolm Brown expecting to join the fold by the end of the month. We’ll save a spot for Rasco, but I don’t expect us to sign more than 25. There is always talk about Texas offering a greyshirt to a player, but since Mack Brown has been here we’ve done that exactly once. So that leaves us with one scholarship to play with (two if we don’t get Rasco).
Who gets the last scholarship? Or will the coaches save it for next year? Charles Jackson has offers from OU and Florida but is still not committed to either. He would commit on the spot to Texas if we offered, but do we have room for another corner? That’s for the coaches to figure out, and they don’t have to figure it out now. Same goes for David Jenkins. Yes he’s committed to LSU, but how committed can someone be to Les Miles? Dogs and recruits can smell fear, and Miles stinks of desperation right now.
And finally, as mentioned earlier there is the player who blows up late in the process or who Texas decides to recruit late in the game for whatever reason. Last year it was William Russ. The year before it was Tevin Mims and before that DJ Grant. There is always someone. Maybe we’ll just take one of the Round Rock guys from OU.
Why? Because we can.
Finally, some definitive Cayleb Jones news. One of the Austin TV guys visited Austin High this week and Jones told him Texas was number one. Big news! Not really. Of course he likes Texas. He also likes Miami. Should we worry? No. Will people worry anyway? Yes. Who was the last player from Austin that Mack Brown wanted, and he didn’t get?
A Recruitocosm totebag to the winner. And we’ll throw in a Koozie used by Jesus himself.

I wouldn’t classify AS-J as an ectomorph. That would actually make it more difficult for him to gain weight.

Recruiting…Art? Science? Mystery? If Mack told RS he’d never be a college QB (obviously he was right on that one), what did he tell John Chiles while recruiting him?
Don’t read anything into that, ’cause like JC said, he’s where he’s supposed to be…it just took him a little long to realize it.
What I’m so obliquely referring to is there’s some debate going on over in BC about why Whaley was recruited as the only back in ’09 when it appeared so obvious (gaffaw) to so many people (double-gaffaw) that he’d never start a game at RB for Texas (I love me some revisionist historians).

magnusbleuveigner said:

G-man, when we recruited Chiles, we were still running spread option. When we recruited Shepard, AND Gilbert, we were transitioning.
When we first signed Whaley I stated he would never get 100 carries in a UT uniform. In fact more were upset with him being the only take than happy with it. What I’m getting at is, there isn’t any revisionist history going on over there.
Check the archives. There was a big majority wondering why nobody was listening to Applewhite about Christine Michael.
In fact, I’m with Applewhite in that we should have offered Brandon Williams.

Keeping with his honesty policy, Mack should have intimated to ASJ that he is destined to be a tackle for U Dub as well in that case. If this is actually how his recruitment goes down, Mack will essentially have lost a five star recruit by doing him a favor and painting this picture of his career to him first.
Shame a kid who seemingly had such a good head on his shoulders has to go and shoot the messenger like this.

Whether he gets bigger or stays the same, I’d take a TE/OT with his athleticism every day of the week and twice on Sundays. The ave. NFL TE is 6’4″ 265. I’ve wanted a hoss that big at UT for decades… if nothing else, tackling him will wear out all the little DBs defending the spread nowadays.

[...] Is Austin Seferian-Jenkins Getting Set to Commit to Washington? Filed under: Sports by David Smith — Leave a comment August 12, 2010 It wasn’t long ago that we were all talking about how Austin Seferian-Jenkins was seemingly a man possessed with leaving the state to pursue his “higher education.” Or how about when it was revealed that he was a “secret verbal” to Rick Neuheisel and the Bruins? Oh, how the times have changed. Now just a few months removed from his apparent exodus from the state of Washington, ASJ has had a renewed interest in staying home, which is definitely a credit to coach Steve Sarkisian’s ability to sell the program, closing the gap with the other out-of-state programs pining for Austin’s services. Just four days from now Austin will be making his intentions known between the University of Texas and our very own Washington Huskies, and all we can do is speculate on his intentions. For someone who might appear to be headed to Texas, I find it odd that he would attend two Huskies’ practices in a row, one in which he brought along a few fellow teammates. Even this article speculates that Seferian-Jenkins is Washington bound: http://recruitocosm.fantake.com/2010/08/11/texas-recruiting-weekly-austin-seferian-jenkins-wait-watc…. [...]

My first post, go easy I’m a virgin (to posting on this blog that is). I’ll make up for some lost time by making this post a narrative:
Lets say for some odd reason that M. Brown commits to Bama. What are our chances getting Green over Nebraska? If we strike out on both M. Brown and Green, will we flirt with Brandon Williams? Decommit OU – > Commit to UT likely?
Also, can someone please explain why we handed out so many offers our first Jr. Day this year? I understand the offers to sure studs (ship, jackson, Evans, Edmond, etc.), but I think should have waited to offer guys such as Doyle and Cochran in order to get a commit from M. Hegarty? The quantity of OL commits was the main reason why Hegarty didn’t commit. If we weren’t able to get an early commit from Hegarty, then we could have offered and received commits later from Doyle and Coachran, bc these two guys have been die hard UT fans their whole life.
Same goes to Onyegbule. Offer to Shipley is a no brainer (best WR. in tx by far), but we could have waited to offer Onyegbule (who is also a life long UT fan, although his bro plays at Neb.), in hopes to land an early commit from Metoyer. If we didn’t get a commit from him by, lets say April or May, then we offer Miles. It is my belief that Metoyer was uninterested in UT after we received two WR commits. Or did the staff rate Onyegbule higher than Metoyer or did the staff believed their chances to land Metoyer was slim to none?
Also, same thing for Moss (another life long UT fan and former UT ball boy). Could we have waited a little while before offering him, in hopes to land Vaughters? Or did Muschamp and staff have Moss rated higher than the other two b/c of his high football IQ?
