Mack Brown has certainly changed the landscape of college football recruiting. Hell, the NCAA is talking about limiting early offers to recruitable athletes until July before they’re senior.
As fans, instead of reading about leans and commitments in December we’re talking about closing up shop with one of the greatest recruiting classes in the history of the program … in June.
Brown is the Gordon Gekko of college football recruiting and although you’ll never hear Brown, a master of diplomacy, extol the virtues of recruiting greed, his actions seem to be doing the talking for him.
If you’re Mack Brown and the University of Texas, greed is evidently very good.
After the recent verbal commitment of Quincy Russell, the Longhorns now sit at 22 for the 2011 class with the Eyes of Texas intently fixed on these final five blue chip prospects: Malcolm Brown, Aaron Green, Jermauria Rasco, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, and Anthony Wallace.
Here’s an update to our handicapping percentages from last week based on what we’ve heard since we last spoke. Since Wallace is relatively new to the party, or at least he’s jumped back onto the radar, let’s start with him.
Anthony Wallace
Odds of Committing, Last Week to this Week: 0% to 40%
Arguably the top middle line backing prospect in the state this year, Wallace’s recruitment has been one of twists and turns. Once thought to be a lock to commit to the Longhorns during junior days, Wallace resisted Mack Brown’s wiles and instead decided to experience the process by looking around a bit.
Most folks including Jesus felt Wallace’s ship had literally sailed at that point, but we were recently informed by one of our sources that earlier this year, Muschamp decreed that both Steve Edmond and Anthony Wallace would have scholarship offers until signing day or until they committed to another school.
Everyone has seen Edmond’s talent on film and Wallace is right there as far as talent goes. But there’s more to the story here than just talent. Wallace is a Mack Brown kid sporting over a 3.5 GPA. His grades also mesh well with the 2011 class because over half of the kids from the Horns’ currently committed crop sport 3.0 or better GPA’s.
Throw in the fact that Wallace plays on a Skyline squad with a wealth of talent to place in the pipeline for the foreseeable future, and you can see why Muschamp and staff would hold out hope for his signature regardless of timetable.
We’re also told that as far and wide as Wallace chooses to look, OU, LSU, or beyond; his heart keeps bringing him back to Texas and specifically Will Muschamp. If Texas has 25 or 26 in the bag by the time Wallace is ready to pull the trigger, make no mistake about it, Texas will make room.
Jermauria Rasco
Odds of Committing, holding steady at 55%
We’re still in a holding pattern for Rasco. In other words no news is good news for the Horns.
Here’s the deal. Rasco probably knows Les Miles is going to be fired at some point in the next couple years (I wonder who’d tell him that) and L$U doesn’t have quite the pull in Northern Louisiana that they do with the rest of the state especially with Evangel kids anyway. This has all but pushed him to Texas or perhaps Alabama. LSU is a distant third.
Also, if you’re worried about Rasco’s ability because of his Rivals film, don’t be. There’s other film out there where he acquits his abilities quite nicely. Make no mistake, the Evangel product would rate as the best defensive end prospect in Texas this year.
Aaron Green
Odds of Committing, Last Week to this Week: 45% to 60%
As Tipsy Gypsie reported earlier, our source is becoming more and more optimistic at the thought of Green joining Brown on the 40 acres.
First, don’t discount the effect that Nebraska’s move to the Big 10 has on the young man and his family. The Huskers will play zero games in the state of Texas after this season, and that’s weighed heavily on the minds of the Green family.
Green’s other favorite program, Texas, has a lot going for it. It’s a great school, a great program, and it’s a short one hour drive up the road from San Antonio. That’s huge.
Also, the Texas coaching staff has done a good job showing how Green would fit into an offense which would feature another great back in Malcolm Brown.
Kick returns, motioning out of the backfield, and reverses are just some of examples the Texas staff has evidently used with Green to illustrate how we’re going to get him touches. It doesn’t hurt that we used tape from two national championship games to show him.
Austin Seferian-Jenkins
Odds of Committing, Last Week to this Week: 90% to 95%
The best tight end prospect in the country is fired up about playing for the Horns in our newfangled power running attack. He’s convinced he can be Bo Scaife to MJ McFarland’s David Thomas (even if the latter is a lofty projection…)
Malcolm Brown
Odds of Committing, Last Week to this Week: 95% to 99%
We’re hearing he’s ready to end the process and may be the next commitment the Horns get. While Dad has had his questions, Momma Brown has been Texas from jump street.
Quincy Russell
We told you last week that Russell was probably going to be the next pickup and indeed he was. One of our guys has seen Russell play basketball and he’s every bit the athlete as any defensive tackle we’ve taken since Shaun Rogers. You know, that 300 pound dude that could dunk a basketball flat-footed.
Now Russell isn’t as good a basketball player as Jackson Jeffcoat, but at least now we can figure that out for a fact. Jesus would love to see some one-on-one tilts between Jackson and Quincy.
I’ll bring Lala and some girls from around the way.

So, Quincy is eight feet tall? Like William Wallace!
That class would be rather absurd.

Man, this is awesome. Besides the potential Doyle grayshirt, is there any chance of anyone in our current class jumping ship prior to signing day?

Those are some impressive percentages. Sefarian Jenkins, Brown, and any of Green, Rasco, and Wallace would be quite the class. I don’t think there’s anyone in the country Texas doesn’t think they have a shot with.
I think this is the kind of recruiting a lot of folks expected after the ’05 championship, where we lock down Texas and cherry pick a few national guys.

The defensive recruiting is obviously spilling over to the offensive side. Had Texas had Muschamp after ’05, you’d see the capitalizing you’re seeing now.
I’m pretty sure the Rivals guys only went off their own footage when rating Rasco. Clearly, he’s better than his ranking.
This Green recruitment will be a good indicator as to how well Nebraska will be able to recruit Texas post realignment. If they can’t land a kid that was an obvious lean, and whose brother plays for them, it could be quite telling.

What about Charles Jackson? Is he still on the radar? Wouldn’t we want another stud CB over another stud LB? We could always take both.

Jackson is probably done and it’s a shame. Word on the street is that Florida is the leader now for his services and that’s good news because he’s a baller you want to keep a guy like that out of Oklahoma.
Hopefully the NFL lockout keeps AJ Williams in burnt orange because we are certainly short on experienced DB’s.

AJ Williams’ decision to stay or leave will be almost as important as VY’s or Ricky’s.

We’re done at DB and I’m good with that. It’s a sick class as is. I’m encouraged by the Anthony Wallace trend and hope it continues.

Vasherized is obviously concussed. You take Jackson over Wallace, and it’s not even a thought. Jackson is a true corner to triplicate with Scott and Turner. Diggs is not a corner. Thompson and Evans are both safeties. Maybe Thompson plays corner, but I don’t like maybes with what we are going to lose. When was the last time Florida came looking to Texas for a corner? Exactly.
We have LB’s for years to come. Bring in the corners, pilfer the stud double first named lb from Tech next year, and smile
This site seems to be picking up, I’ll have to check in more often.

I don’t generally post much, but I do have a little bit of info to add here.
I live in Washington DC and was at a party last weekend here where someone from the NFLPA and few players were. For you Cowboys fans, Felix Jones is one hell of a nice guy. Anyhow, I asked the NFLPA guy about what they felt the case would be with juniors declaring for the 2011 draft. He said that since the declaration date occurs several months before they expect the lockout to start there would not be many juniors declaring. He felt the lockout was a near certainty.
I specifically asked because of AJ. I realize most of this can be surmised from looking at the situation logically, but it was still interesting to hear it from someone so close to the situation.

Great blog. Good work. Will be interesting with AJ. I am sure Mack Brown/Will Muschamp are playing it safe and assuming he leaves early. If he does not leave then that is bonus.
Really enjoy the odds percentage. I agree that it will be
Malcolm Brown-makes one very happy and some relief
Austin Sepherian Jenkins
and Aaron Green or Rassco
Feel that the Horns are done on the defensive side with the exception of Rassco.

It’s a damn shame we can’t get Jackson in this class. I really do hope something shakes loose that opens up a scholarship for him.

agree and that is simply amazing considering where we were even 3 years ago at that position.

Magnus has an Aquavit problem.
Wallace is the better player, regardless of position. He’ll knock your ass out. Muschamp has indicated we’re done at DB otherwise Jackson would have been offered on his visit and already commited.

If your percentages hold up, that’s too many players. What gives? Who gets squeezed out? We’re at 22 already, and you’ve got 5 listed who seem good bets to join the party.
Is my math fuzzy?

Grey shirts by Doyle and the other three star OL or Chet Moss wil fix it.
Yeppie said:

Currently 22 players. Fill the needs
1. RB – one or two – Brown and or Green
2. Two players that are instant contributors as freshmen and labeled the best at position would be Austin Sepherion Jenkins and Rasco
Brown is number -scholly 23
Austin Sepherion Jenkens- scholly 24
If Aaron Green commits to Texas then he becomes scholly 25. If not then Rasco.
TWIST to the scenario-Attrition that we do not know of and Doyle taking a grey shirt making Rasco scholly 26 but Doyle does not count to the class as he is grey shirted to rehab injury. So the class finishes at 25. Granted no more attrition from other causes.
Jackson would have been nice but he and Wallace may not be invited to the dance.
Dont BLAME Texas for not taking Wallace. He could have committed but he let the clock expire. As from info we are aware of…

we took 25 last year, but 3 enrolled early. did any of the 3 apply to the previous class? if all 3 did and if doyle is greyshirted, that would allow for an absolute max of 29.
no way we take 29, of course, but i’m saying we might be able to take as many as we feel the need.

They recruited Adrian White of DeSoto for almost 18 months. I saw part of it in person.

Florida doesn’t really waste much time in Texas. Who else besides AJ have they recruited in Texas in the past 3 years? Jeffcoat….
magnusbleuveigner said:

Newy, White was a UT foregone conclusion. This is different, and the only reason they offered Jackson, is because UT didn’t, and that’s quite telling.
whoops, I can’t think of anyone else, and even last year they put all their eggs in the Ronald Powell basket. Florida going after Jackson, with their abundance of corners in their backyard, tells me we need to offer Jackson.

I don’t even know what you are arguing. Florida did in fact recruit White. They are now also recruiting Jackson. Should Texas recruit a player because Florida does as well? I think the staff did not know what to do with Diggs initially and now they have him slated as a CB/S. That took someone’s spot.
Maybe they still come back and offer Jackson but now they have 5 DBs in this class and are looking at cherry picking the best player out there.

Texas could goto 27 commits. Attrition will take 2-3 every year. Grey shirt Doyle and then realize that the 2011 class will only be at a max of 20. Jackson would have been nice, but the numbers just will not work out to have him on scholly.
Next year 2011
RB 1-2
OL-2-3
DL 3-4 including DE
LB 2-3
DB 3-4
WR – 3-4
Special Teams- Kicker gets scholarship-Will be in need of kicker
All will be top 150 players in the country.
The redshirt freshment of 2010 actually complete class. Could be rated as the top rated recruiting class of the decade.
Being a Longhorn the past 5 years have been great. The outlook the next 5 years looks to be even better. I think Will Muschamp takes over as head coach after the 2011 Season. He will be one of the few coaches to take over in the first year and win/play for a National Championship. Any thoughts???

I truly think the class will end at 25.
1. Malcolm Brown
2. ASJ
3. Rassco
In 2011 get the stud RB from Texas that will compliment Brown.
Will take Green and Wallace if any additional attrition takes place in the scholly players.
Do you hear a clocking ticking…. if not the ticking clock will get very loud once (hopefully) Malcolm Brown commits.
If you want to play for Texas, you will have time to look but if you keep looking for greener grass, upon your return the original grass my be grazed. UT gives you an education, exposure, chance to compete with elite talent – enhance exposure and a chance to compete for a National Championship every year.

If Green wants to be a Longhorn, I am sure the Texas staff will find room for him on the roster. Same for Wallace too. However, not sure if Texas will take both of the recruits. it may be room for Green or Wallace. If I was Green I would decide after Brown commitment. Can you imagine having the headlines of Texas two step RB duo. “Thunder and Lightning”.
