Texas Recruiting Weekly: Attrition Shakes Things Up

Posted by Jesus Shuttlesworth on June 24th, 2010 under Football, Recruiting

So I talked to a couple sources this week, and no, they aren’t Spike Lee or my girl Lala.

Let’s start with a shakeup in the Longhorn 85-man roster that’s going to create waves in recruiting for the 2011 class. Jesus is divining that the defensive tackle depth chart is fitting to be one spot lighter and it’s a big one.

Literally.

Derek Johnson isn’t making his grades and doesn’t have John Turturro there to fix them for him. So now you have to count on your two starters to log a ton of snaps with only the incoming freshmen to provide real depth.

Not good.

Dorsey, Cotton, or Bible better come in ready to play. Bible needs to drop some weight before summer drills or shed it fast in two-a-days. Jump some rope and grab an apple, Schoolhouse Rock-style my man.

Cotton is a project in that he was projected to sink or swim at defensive tackle or be moved to the offensive line. He’ll need to log 10-15 snaps a game at DT if Bible can’t drop weight.

That leaves Dorsey as our only hope to get big minutes. I talked my source at Klein Collins and he claims Ashton is one of the best defensive tackle prospect he’s ever coached against. He said Dorsey spent most of the time throwing his kids around like a ragdoll and has the ability to contribute right away at Texas. So he’s our third tackle, and he’ll get plenty of snaps next season. Let’s hope he’s ready.

Other options include Sam Acho dropping down inside or incorporating more 3-4 looks.

As for the effect on recruiting, here’s how it’s likely to shake out. Quincy Russell goes from being a luxury to a must have at DT to go along with Desmond Jackson. Don’t be surprised if talk of Cedric Reed moving to a 5-tech DT is floated to Rasco’s people, which would make Rasco the only defensive end in Texas’ class.

Texas needs bodies at tackle and it needs them now. Being 6-5 240 without the benefit of 3 squares a day and world class weight program means Reed has the capacity to put on a lot of weight.

Another route would be for Texas to try to get back into the running with Marquis Anderson or try to go out of state. Preferably not the state of Arkansas. This is effectively the unwritten 11th Commandment when it comes to recruiting.

Moving on to the remaining targets, one of our readers asked if we could handicap the chances Texas has at landing their remaining targets.

Josh Turner
Odds of committing: 100%
Prophetic, imo. Texas racheted up the pressure by floating rumors of a potential offer to an in-state DB named Jenkins when it looked like Turner was playing the Camp Visit two-step. With the Charles Jackson offer out there looming as well, Turner had a Come to Jesus moment. Hallellujah! A thin depth chart just got a nice talent injection. Think Chykie Brown without the headgames and susceptibility to pump fakes.

Malcolm Brown
Odds of committing: 95%
I talked to my guy about this one and I asked about the Alabama stuff specifically. He answered with the question: “Does his momma like Bama?” Nope. Momma loves Texas. Land mama, land the kid — 12th commandment. This one’s been a done deal for a good while even if it takes until the end of the summer.

Quincy Russell
Odds of committing: 90%
This kid’s about to be given the keys to the Longhorn Castle because he’ll be treated like royalty from here on out. Russell just became a must have unless we decide to go out of state and cherry pick.

Jermauria Rasco
Odds of committing: 55%
It’s true, Rasco will be tough to get out of SEC territory, but I’m more worried about Bama than LSU. LSU doesn’t have the choke hold on Northern Louisiana like it does the rest of the state, especially if the kid plays at Evangel.

Geiggar is also there to serve as a watchful eye if L$U goes $upersonic with their recruiting pitch. Again, don’t be surprised if the Horns whisper about Reed moving to DT and claiming Jermauria is the only DE they’re recruiting, in an effort to elevate the young man’s interest.

Aaron Green
Odds of committing: 45%
Proximity will keep the Horns in this one until the end. He’s open to getting snaps as a playmaker in the Ramonce Taylor mold.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins
Odds of committing: 90%
We’ll blow him away on his official and close the deal by selling him on our sparkly new two TE power running game. Don’t be surprised if Malcolm Brown takes an unofficial that week with his dad to show we’re serious about this paradigm shift in the running game.

Charles Jackson
Odds of committing: 20%
With Turner on board you have four guys that can play corner. Evans, Scott, and Diggs gives you plenty of depth. Texas is likely wrapped up at DB for this class.

Marquis Anderson
Odds of committing: 10%
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Don’t be surprised to see Texas try to get back on this young man. It worked with Roy Miller, James Kirkendoll, and Christian Scott. Why not?

So while the Johnson news is a tough break, there is always going to be academic attrition and you also have to keep close tabs on guys like Brian Davis, err, DJ Monroe to make sure the players stay eligible.

13th Commandment: IN MUSCHAMP WE TRUST

Very sorry to hear that about Johnson. Thought he had a lot of potential if he could get in shape.

We are now an injury to Kheeston Randall away from disastrous DT depth. Any chance Kriegal or Mims could fill in? Without Randall, we’d have Howell and Dorsey as starters, neither of whom have meaningful game experience.

I know Mims and Kriegal aren’t exactly seasoned vets, but at least they’ve been in the program for a while.

  3. Mims and Howell are both in the same recruiting class. Howell got hurt and had to redshirt, Mims didn’t. We have a lot of talented depth at DT, it’s just young but I wouldn’t worry about Dorsey or Bible (if he’s loses weight) getting PT in the fall.

I like Greg Daniels chances to grow into DT, just don’t think he would get there next year. Cedric Reed looks lanky in all pictures I’ve seen. Rasco would be more suited for DT spin IMO. You never know how these kids will grow, I’m still waiting for Jermaine Anderson to grow into Tony Brackens.

  5. I like Reed at DE and I hope Johnson can turn his grades around.

I hope Texas lands Quincy Russell either way.

Is Tyrell Higgins still on the roster? I wouldn’t want to lean too heavily on him or anything but he can probably be counted on for a few snaps a game…

  7. If WM cannot get 10-15 snaps out of Mims/Daniels then what are they doing on the roster?

Who else will the coaches target at DT? What about Anthony Johnson from O. Perry Walker in New Orleans, Louisiana? He mentioned a couple of months ago that he would be taking an official visit… full of shit?

  9. I’m not suggesting Texas tamper or anything, but does USC have any Jr. or Sr. DTs that might be looking to switch teams?…I think after the NCAA USC ruling, Jr. and Sr. players can transfer without penalty.

To me this route doesn’t seem like Mack’s style, so that could make this an extreme long shot, but I’m just thinking out loud.

Personally, I hope Johnson finds a way to stay with the Longhorns.

  10. My sources tell me that alabama has the lead for brown.

  11. why is the address for tfloss ‘yahoo’? does that mean he’s an imposter or what?

for that matter, why are all these bozos trying to sell brown to bama? i don’t get it. what’s the point?

  12. Randall
    Howell
    Mims
    Higgins
    Dorsey
    Bible
    Cotton
    And oh yeah, Sam Acho

We’re just fine, depth-wise. This is the third consecutive year that people have freaked about DT heading into the season, and each year DT has turned out to be the least of our worries. In Boom I trust.

  13. Thus the 13th commandment. Damn Jesus freaks.

  14. Excellent stuff. Thank you Jesus.

  15. Aaron Green’s latest:

“I’ve narrowed down the list to my top four schools. They are not my final four schools, just my top four right now. I like Nebraska, Cal, FSU, and Texas in no order. They are all recruiting me hard and I will probably take official visits to these four schools. I don’t think I’ll take all five official visits, but who knows.”

He continued, “I don’t know that much about (FSU) but they are showing me lots of love. Texas, they always win and have strong tradition. Nebraska, I really like the staff and I think they are an up and coming school. Cal I like the offense they run there.

“I ain’t in any rush to make a commitment, so if any school pressures me it ain’t gonna happen. I’m going to take at least three visits and then try to figure it out. I’m just looking for wherever I feel at home,” Green concluded.

    Maybe we shouldn’t rush him.

  16. “In Boom I trust.”

    That’s a very un-Nordberg like statement.

  17. Quincy Russell to recommit tomorrow?

  18. [...] you read the Recruitocosm last Thursday, you knew this was coming. Burnt Orange Nation has the scouting breakdown on [...]

  19. “That’s a very un-Nordberg like statement.”

He brings out the best in everyone.

  20. Any thoughts. I think Quincy Russell was the last commit on the defense. So I do not think Rassco will get a scholly. With one exception which I will mention later.
Class of 2011 predictions will be a total of 25.
    Russell is committed.
So lets say number 23, 24 and commit 25 will be the following.
    Malcolm Brown-RB
    Austin Stepheron-Jenkins-TE
    Aaron Green
If Aaron Green waits as the clock ticks then the class will be 24 as Texas will find another quick RB to compliment Malcolm Brown in the 2012 class.
A pleasant surprise to come prediction. Demarco Cobbs could be placed into the RB position and thrive in the UT RB scenario. Demarco Cobbs will be special and a huge contributor to UT at any position but I have feeling he will become a RB.
